Recreational Dance Deadline

15

Open to both boys and girls, instructed by Emily Beelen, this recreational dance program will offer fun and fitness in an informal, recreational setting.  Proper technique will be taught.  There will be no exams or competitions.  The last class will have an opportunity for parents to view their young dancer’s achievements.  Classes are held upstairs in the Portland Community Hall.  Dancers need not have traditional dance shoes, but should wear running shoes or be prepared to dance in bare feet.  Dancers should wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

Parents are encouraged to drop your children off 5 minutes prior to the start of their class and pick them up at the exact time class ends.  Parents may wait in the downstairs portion of the community hall if they so desire.

Participants may be asked to purchase a Rideau Lakes Dance shirt prior to their last class to be worn for the “recital”.

To register your child please fill out the registration form found in the Spring and Summer Leisure Services Brochure, online here or at the Municipal Offices in Chantry and mail it along with the appropriate registration fees to the Township Offices by April 5th.

Family Day in Canada – Febryary 15th

4

Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan on the 15th of February. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. Family Day gives families the chance to spend time together. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

Activities to discover during that day…

On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities.

As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends.

Public Life

In the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Many businesses and organizations are closed, but post offices may be open. Public transport services may run to their usual or reduced timetables.

In the province of Manitoba, the third Monday of February is a general holiday, known as Louis Riel Day. Many people have a day off work and school and many businesses, organizations and stores are closed. In some communities, stores are open after noon. Public transport services may run to Sunday or holiday timetables. In rural areas, there may be no services.

Background history of the « family day »

Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in 2008. British Columbia observes Family Day as a statutory holiday for the first time in 2013. One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday.

Happy Labour Day!

labour day Canada

In 2015 Labour Day is Monday September 7

Celebrate this year’s first Monday of September with your friends and family! This holiday officially celebrates workers and the labour union movement, however, most of us only think of it as the last long weekend of the summer, a perfect occasion for one last BBQ or canoe trip.

Many seasonal attractions and vendors close after the labour day long weekend and it is generally the start of the fall shoulder season for tourist attractions.

Traditionally, Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate workers’ rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. These still play a role in Labour Day for some Canadians, but many people see the first Monday in September as an opportunity to take a late summer trip, perhaps to their country cottage, or enjoy the company of family or friends at picnics, fairs, festivals and fireworks displays. For teenagers and other students, the Labour Day weekend is the last chance to celebrate with a party or to go on a trip before school re-opens for the new academic year.

Canadian football fans may spend a large proportion of the weekend watching the Labour Day Classic matches live or on television. The Labour Day Classic consists of three games between high ranking teams in the Canadian Football League. One match is played on the Sunday before Labour Day and two on Labour Day.
