A record size crowd ate, drank and danced the night away with THE HOGTOWN ALLSTARS last Friday April 18 at BLUES ON THE RIDEAU at THE COVE INN Westport Ontario.

This Toronto based supergroup is made up of 5 members of DOWNCHILD (this year’s Juno Award winners for Best Blues Album Of The Year) – Chuck Jackson (vocals & harmonica), Michael Fonfara (keyboards), Pat Carey (sax), Gary Kendall (bass), Mike Fitzpatrick (drums) – plus the great Teddy Leonard on guitar (formerly with 2X Juno Award winners FATHEAD).

They played tight, fast and smooth right from the opening song and had the crowd up and dancing all night long. Collectively this band represents over 250 years of experience playin’ the Blues! This was their second appearance at BOTR @ The Cove and based on the crowd reaction you can definitely expect to see the “Hoggies” back soon.

Special Guests in attendance included Stevie & Anne Connor from Blues & Roots Radio in Port Credit, Ontario (www.BluesAndRootsRadio.com) with B&RR Show hosts Mark Stenzler of The Blues Zeppelin in Berne, Switzerland and Craig Mills of Eastern Passage. Randy MacNeil & Francine Aubrey, authors of the great photo book “A Portrait Of Blues In Canada” (www.randymacneil.com/e/bluesbook_e.shtml) were also there. Francine was celebrating her birthday.

The Cove served up their usual delicious buffet – roast beef and fried cod in remoulade with mixed veggies, roast potatoes, two salads and home made buns – topped off with cheesecake covered in fresh local maple syrup for dessert. $816 was raised for Westport’s Rideau Vista and St. Edward’s elementary schools.

Acoustic Blue Mondays at The Cove Inn in Westport, Ontario launches its 3rd season in June. This famous Dinner & Show fundraiser Series features some of Canada’s premier acoustic artists – “sit-and-listen” Blues as good as it gets.

Proceeds go to support local Westport cultural events. There will be 4 Shows this summer all in the intimate, air-conditioned comfort of The Cove Dining Room. The Cove is a classic 137 year old country inn with a Day Spa right next door. When one thinks of the Yukon Territories, images are conjured up of the great white north, the Klondike Gold Rush and mountain men – not as a hotbed for blues and roots musicians. Two of the Yukon’s most popular young roots musicians, Declan O’Donovan and Ryan McNally, are coming together for a tour of Ontario.

This double-bill will showcase original material from O’Donovan and McNally, and surely a few surprises as they accompany each other on stage. The duo from the land of the midnight sun, along with drummer Lonnie Powell and bassist Keith Picot will be performing in Wesport on May 7th at The Cove Inn.

With a raw, gritty and unique voice, singer/pianist Declan O’Donovan is a master storyteller who draws his audiences in with evocative lyrics, a sense of humour just this side of dark, and a sweet melodic charm that is plain irresistible. Moving his deft fingers along the keyboard, swiftly changing from blues & roots rock to Canadiana and back again, this genre-bending singer/songwriter possesses a truly organic sound and a story (or two) to tell.

With more aliases then a stagecoach bandit, guitarist / singer-songwriter Ryan McNally is everywhere.
