Music in the Park

MUSIC IN THE PARK – Sponsored by the Elgin and Area Heritage Society – 2:00 p.m.

The Red Brick School (1887) is a restored Ontario Trust-designated building.

Built in 1887 to new provincial guidelines, this building (SS#5, South Crosby) features increased window space, amongst other features, intended to improve the learning atmosphere. It served Elgin village children until 1963 when, with the closure of rural S. Crosby schools, it was replaced by a larger facility.

Rescued and restored by the Elgin and Area Heritage Society, its classroom provides “a living history experience” for North Leeds students and a centre for the educational archives of Rideau Lakes schools.

Summer Dance Chaffey’s Lock

CHAFFEY’S LOCK & AREA HERITAGE SOCIETY presents “GEARING UP FOR SUMMER DANCE” We are welcoming back the band leMeow (soul-infused indie pop smothered in sass) Get ready to “get down”!  Door and Bar open at 7pm.  Music starts at 7:30pm. Tickets available online at Onstage Direct , with a limited number at Browns Marina.

The Chaffey’s Lock Community Hall was built on bake sales, dances, and raffles, and with nails, boards and labour donated by the community. At the helm of this tremendous community effort was the Chaffey’s Lock Women’s Institute, which succeeded in its goal of opening the Hall in time for the 100th anniversary of the Rideau Canal in 1932. The Institute added the kitchen in 1978.

Over the years the Hall has seen a wide variety of events, including the Women’s Institute’s annual bazaar, dances, potlucks suppers and concerts. Returning soldiers were celebrated at a banquet, and 4-H meetings, conferences, limbo competitions, fish fries, music jams, and fast-paced euchre games regularly filled the Hall.

National Aboriginal peoples day!

On June 21, celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis!

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The Canadian Constitution recognizes these three groups as Aboriginal peoples, also known as Indigenous peoples.

Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.

In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

National Aboriginal Day was announced in 1996 by then Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc, through the Proclamation Declaring June 21 of Each Year as National Aboriginal Day. This was the result of consultations and statements of support for such a day made by various Indigenous groups:

  • in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) called for the creation of National Aboriginal Solidarity Day
  • in 1995, the Sacred Assembly, a national conference of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people chaired by Elijah Harper, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples
  • also in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day

Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. It is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. Father’s Day is not a federal public holiday in Canada. It falls on a Sunday, which is a day off for many workers so many offices and stores are closed. However, some shopping precincts and stores, as well as restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues, may be particularly busy on Father’s Day.

There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day so some people saw a link between the two.

The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations and planned a day to honor fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910.

In the United States, there are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother’s Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.

Sin and Swoon at the Cove Inn!

Montreal’s “Sin and Swoon” is made up of Ottawa Valley native Michael James O’Brien and Antigonish, Nova Scotia’s Michelle Tompkins. They love George and Tammy, old time country music, and the harmony singing of the Louvin Brothers and the Delmore Brothers. Recently featured on “The Vinyl Cafe´ with Stuart Maclean” on CBC radio and NPR, their new album is now available!

Singer-songwriters Mike O’Brien and Michelle Tompkins have been performing together for the last few years, after the couple’s post-dinner-table-song-swaps led to the odd pub gig to help make ends meet. Songs were written, and the culmination of the last couple years of work has led to the release of their first record “Did I Turn The Oven Off?”

Both have been busy as backup singers/musicians on the Montreal local scene, lending a hand to such notables as Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers, Plants and Animals, Blood and Glass, Katie Moore, and Thus:Owls. Mike O’Brien was also a guitar player on the last two Vic Chesnutt tours. Now with the release of their new record, their plans are to get out and play as much as possible.
