Joey Wright with Brownstone & Jenny Whiteley in concert!

Joey was one of the leading lights in the explosive bluegrass, old time and traditional country scene in Toronto in the late 90’s. Joey joined Jenny Whiteley’s band in 1999, and their first two albums (Jenny Whiteley & Hopetown) both won Juno awards for Best Roots Traditional Album.

In 2005 Joey joined Sarah Harmer’s band to record the album I’m A Mountain which earned him a gold record. In 2007 Joey collaborated with Jesse Zubot, Steve Dawson, Dan Whiteley and Joe Phillips to create his own album, Jalopy. Jalopy received a Juno nomination for Best Instrumental Album. The album Hatch followed in 2010 with 2017’s Country, Music just out.

The album explores new sounds combining pedal steel, beautiful brass, and angelic harmonies with creative textures, focused writing and inventive composition and includes Amy Millan and members of Montreal’s Stars, Evening Hymns, Christine Bougie , Aaron Comeau and Jenny Whiteley.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and around the same part of the year in other places.

What do people do?

Many people have a day off work on the second Monday of October. They often use the three-day Thanksgiving weekend to visit family or friends who live far away, or to receive them in their own homes. Many people also prepare a special meal to eat at some point during the long weekend. Traditionally, this included roast turkey and seasonal produce, such as pumpkin, corn ears and pecan nuts. Now, the meal may consist of other foods, particularly if the family is of non-European descent.

Acoustic Lunch with Seamus Cowan and David Rotundo!

There’s a first time for everything and the first time any member of Blues on the Rideau approached Seamus to ask if he would like to sit in an play a tune, it was David Rotundo. Ever since then, there has a been a connection both musical, spiritual and personal. Let’s see what happens when the two meet for music over lunch…

Seamus Cowan
Seamus has been playing in bands since he was seventeen and has toured extensively throughout Canada and the US. He started early in a rhythm section on bass with his twin brother Jeff on drums. He’s played in dozens of bands (including his own band Bullmoose, as well as Spoon River, The High Dials, Spencer Evans Trio, JP Houston and The Murder, Young Petty Stones, Tavis E. Triance & The Natural Way, and many others).
His first recording with his band Bullmoose was released in 2004 and has since released a second album and three as a member of Spoon River and The Natural Way. He now writes his own tunes on acoustic guitar, etc. He has co-written songs for these records and has sung, played and recorded on over 15 albums and performed on an NFB film. He studied Jazz Performance on upright bass at McGill University in Montreal and graduated with a BMus in 2002. He also runs a family hotel/music venue called The Cove in Westport where he guests and backs up many musicians and currently lives with his wife and two sons.

Lonesome Ace Stringband at the Cove Inn!

The Lonesome Ace Stringband brings grit, skill and abandon to old-time, Appalachian folk songs and fiddle/banjo tunes. These are songs and tunes for life and all of it’s occasions: festivals, dances, wars, parties and funerals. The music comes from a tradition that has inspired and brought together generations of people. It’s themes – love, loss, hard work and hardship, faith, and everyday life – speak to everyone. The members are Chris Coole on banjo, John Showman on fiddle and Max Heineman on bass. Together they bring a deep respect for the roots of the music, a keen sense of innovation to the performance and material, and a passion for the sound that transcends both.

This is old-time music for today’s old soul.Their debut album, “Old Time”, was recorded in 2014, and was met with critical acclaim from the folk, old-time, and bluegrass community. In 2016, the band recorded their sophomore album “Gone For Evermore”. Heading into the studio, the group’s goal was to capture the feel, energy and narrative of their live playing.

Fee: $15.
