Mother’s Day – May 8

2

A popular day for gifts of flowers and greeting cards.

Many Canadians celebrate Mother’s Day by showing their appreciation for mothers or mother figures. The Mother’s Day date in Canada is on the second Sunday of May each year.

What Do People Do?

Many people in Canada express their gratitude towards mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day. It is the time for people to thank mothers and mother figures who took the time care for them and help them through life’s challenges.

Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

Judy Wall – Alpines, Succulents & Rockery Plants

16

RIDEAU LAKES HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY presents speaker Judy Wall – Alpines, Succulents & Rocky Plants starting at 7:15pm at the Portland Community Hall. All Welcome! ($5.00 admission for non-members).

The Society provides free refreshments and door prizes, as well as information and advice on all your gardening needs.

Opening in 2000, with only one section of the debris-filled foundation of a collapsed dairy barn cleared and a few newly planted gardens, the Walls have gone on to create a destination that provides a unique gardening experience.

Finding the weather in our area to include fairly significant droughts and hot spells, the Walls decided to focus on long-blooming, drought tolerant, lower maintenance succulents and alpines. They seek rare and unusual seeds from around the world and not normally found in the retail trade, which they germinate, grow in their gardens and observe for a year before offering to their customers. They also offer workshops in hypertufa containers and decorative leaf art, which you can use as water features, birdbaths, planting containers and stepping stones.

Judy Wall trained in Horticulture at University of Guelph and is a Lanark County Master Gardener. She is the Past President of the Ottawa Valley Rock Garden and Horticultural Society, and a member of the North American and Ontario Rock Garden Societies.

Delta Maple Syrup Festival 2016

1212The Old Stone Mill NHS will be open for tours from 9 am to 3 pm during Delta’s Maple Syrup Festival. A used Book Sale will take place in the Old Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday, light refreshments will be available. Milling and blacksmithing demonstrations will take place on Saturday, starting at 1 pm. Many other activities taking place in Delta.

Established in 1967, the Delta Maple Syrup Festival was the first maple celebration to be established in the area. In planning for Canada’s Centennial, a small group of dedicated volunteers met regularly in the Council Chambers at the Old Town Hall. As President of the group, Harold Russell worked tirelessly as he contacted every farmer, arranged for sugar shack visits and tours, promoted sugaring off demonstrations and jack wax parties.

In the beginning, the Festival was a three day event held in March which included feeding pancakes and syrup to busloads of students on school trips. In order to keep up with the crowds, meals were served on both floors of the Old Town Hall.

Visitors were able to tour local sugar bushes along with watching maple syrup being bottled and maple candy being made in the Confederated Foods Syrup Plant building.

Over the years, the Festival continued through the efforts of many local residents and Service Clubs
before becoming a project for the Directors of the Delta Agricultural Society. And now, the tradition continues 49 years later!

The « Lost and Found »

4 Saving Rideau Lakes Heritage…The Delta Mill Society, in collaboration with the Chaffey’s Lock and Area Heritage Society and the Rideau Lakes Libraries, is working to create a lasting digital record of the valuable documents and photographs important to our area’s history.

The Delta Mill Society got its start in 1963, when the last individual owner of the Old Stone Mill (built in 1810), Hastings Steele, deeded the mill, for the sum of $1.00, to four trustees; Albert Frye, Elizabeth Robinson, Mildred Sweet and Robert Tuck. These trustees in turn became the original founders of The Delta Mill Society. In 1972 the Society was incorporated as a Non-profit Corporation in the Province of Ontario.

5 The focus of the society has been the preservation of the main building and the creation and operation of the mill as a museum. The mandate of the museum is to “show through exhibits and artifacts, how the grist mill was one of the most important elements when Delta was first settled, and to research the evolution of the communities served by the mill. There will be emphasis on the establishment of the industries of the area, and the changing patterns of economic activity in response to various influences, especially technology, up to 1900.”

Search your attics, filing cabinets and dresser drawers and bring your papers and photographs to these events for scanning and recording.
