Mother’s Day – May 8

2

A popular day for gifts of flowers and greeting cards.

Many Canadians celebrate Mother’s Day by showing their appreciation for mothers or mother figures. The Mother’s Day date in Canada is on the second Sunday of May each year.

What Do People Do?

Many people in Canada express their gratitude towards mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day. It is the time for people to thank mothers and mother figures who took the time care for them and help them through life’s challenges.

Carnations are a popular Mother’s Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother’s Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one’s love and appreciation for them.

Delta Maple Syrup Festival 2016

1212The Old Stone Mill NHS will be open for tours from 9 am to 3 pm during Delta’s Maple Syrup Festival. A used Book Sale will take place in the Old Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday, light refreshments will be available. Milling and blacksmithing demonstrations will take place on Saturday, starting at 1 pm. Many other activities taking place in Delta.

Established in 1967, the Delta Maple Syrup Festival was the first maple celebration to be established in the area. In planning for Canada’s Centennial, a small group of dedicated volunteers met regularly in the Council Chambers at the Old Town Hall. As President of the group, Harold Russell worked tirelessly as he contacted every farmer, arranged for sugar shack visits and tours, promoted sugaring off demonstrations and jack wax parties.

In the beginning, the Festival was a three day event held in March which included feeding pancakes and syrup to busloads of students on school trips. In order to keep up with the crowds, meals were served on both floors of the Old Town Hall.

Visitors were able to tour local sugar bushes along with watching maple syrup being bottled and maple candy being made in the Confederated Foods Syrup Plant building.

Over the years, the Festival continued through the efforts of many local residents and Service Clubs
before becoming a project for the Directors of the Delta Agricultural Society. And now, the tradition continues 49 years later!

150th LOMBARDY FAIR OPEN HOUSE

150th LOMBARDY FAIR OPEN HOUSE, March 20 – OPEN HOUSE 1-4 p.m. at Lombardy Agricultural Hall.  See the Memorabilia the Lombardy Agricultural Society has collected over the past 150 years.

The Lombardy and Smiths Falls area has seen many changes in the last 150 years, but their pride in their agricultural roots has remained strong thanks to the efforts of volunteers who have brought us the Lombardy Fair every year since 1866.
3“We hope that we can invite all the past presidents and sectaries and past ladies presidents to the fair and to the special events that are going on,”

Just as one project strives to create new memories, a planned open house for the afternoon of Sunday, March 20 at the agricultural society hall on Highway 15. The drop in event will welcome the public out to see much of the memorabilia the society has collected in their 150-year history including scrap books, pictures, trophies and fair books dating back to 1918. There is little available prior to this date as the agricultural society suffered a fire where they stored their artifacts.

At 150 years old, the fair is officially one year older than Canada, however the Lombardy Fair can trace its roots back even further than 1866. Hicks said prior to this date Lombardy and Kitley would alternate hosting a country fair. This faded out and was replaced with the permanent Lombardy Fair we have come to enjoy.

Sunday March 20 | 1-4 p.m

at Lombardy Agricultural Hall

Family Day in Canada – Febryary 15th

4

Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan on the 15th of February. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. Family Day gives families the chance to spend time together. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

Activities to discover during that day…

On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities.

As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends.

Public Life

In the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Many businesses and organizations are closed, but post offices may be open. Public transport services may run to their usual or reduced timetables.

In the province of Manitoba, the third Monday of February is a general holiday, known as Louis Riel Day. Many people have a day off work and school and many businesses, organizations and stores are closed. In some communities, stores are open after noon. Public transport services may run to Sunday or holiday timetables. In rural areas, there may be no services.

Background history of the « family day »

Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in 2008. British Columbia observes Family Day as a statutory holiday for the first time in 2013. One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday.
