Double-bill of roots & blues at The Cove Inn on May 7

When one thinks of the Yukon Territories, images are conjured up of the great white north, the Klondike Gold Rush and mountain men – not as a hotbed for blues and roots musicians. Two of the Yukon’s most popular young roots musicians, Declan O’Donovan and Ryan McNally, are coming together for a tour of Ontario.

This double-bill will showcase original material from O’Donovan and McNally, and surely a few surprises as they accompany each other on stage. The duo from the land of the midnight sun, along with drummer Lonnie Powell and bassist Keith Picot will be performing in Wesport on May 7th at The Cove Inn.

With a raw, gritty and unique voice, singer/pianist Declan O’Donovan is a master storyteller who draws his audiences in with evocative lyrics, a sense of humour just this side of dark, and a sweet melodic charm that is plain irresistible. Moving his deft fingers along the keyboard, swiftly changing from blues & roots rock to Canadiana and back again, this genre-bending singer/songwriter possesses a truly organic sound and a story (or two) to tell.

With more aliases then a stagecoach bandit, guitarist / singer-songwriter Ryan McNally is everywhere. Whether he’s playing with his own solo band, Old Time Machine, Dana Sipos, or various rockabilly outfits, he can’t be kept off Canadian stages. From rockabilly and blues to old-time and folk or even experimental pop, Ryan makes it all happen with grace, skill and plenty of pomade.

Quotes:
“Although comparisons to Tom Waits can be made, O’Donovan has a unique voice, and is emerging as an internationally-recognized songwriter and equally skilled as a musician.”
– Barry “Jack” Jenkins, What’s Up Yukon

“O’Donovan has a knack with melodies to be sure. His music is unfussy and modest yet it manages to coil into to heart and soul in a way that makes perfect sense. O’Donovan and his trio of mates cast a mighty spell and if moody yet hopeful is your bag then this set will please you to your core.”
– Jeff Monk, Uptown Magazine

“Ryan McNally, a young, stompin’ bluesman… ,impressed with his lonesome howl at his first ever show at the Grand.” -Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio 3
