Westport has a new Mayor

Westport MayorWestport Ontario has a new mayor, long time councillor Dan Grunig. Grunig has been sworn-in as the interim mayor of the Village of Westport replacing Bill Thake.

The municipality will miss Thake, Grunig said, but it has to get on with business.

“It wasn’t the best of circumstances, but somebody has to do it,” Grunig said Monday night.

“He’s been doing it for a long time and I guess we all knew that at some point, that some time, somebody else would have to do it.”

Grunig has 15 years of experience on Westport’s council.

Councillor Jackalyn Brady said his senior experience was a major factor in Grunig being chosen for the interim mayor’s position.

“He assumed the mayor’s chair when Bill was very ill a number of years ago too,” Brady said.

Thake was mayor of Westport for 44 years when he died of a stroke on June 26.

Council held a moment of silence for him on Monday night.

“We all recognized the vacant chair and what it meant and how it’s going to be different for the next little while, until we get used to it,” Brady said.

“But, we went on and had the regular council meeting, because that’s what Bill would want.”

Council discussed ways to have a proper memorial for Thake, Brady said.

Nothing was decided Monday night, but councillors will return to the next meeting with some ideas of how to permanently commemorate Thake.

With his new mayoral position, Grunig will sit on United Counties council with the mayors and reeves from other municipalities within Leeds-Grenville.

He will begin those duties in August, because he’s missed some committee meetings held already this month.

“It’s also out of respect for Bill,” Grunig said of the August start date.

As for Westport’s priorities moving into the future, Grunig said the village is currently focusing on the summer season.

The summer is the busiest season for Westport, Grunig said.

“We’re monitoring the traffic on the Rideau Canal, because…our harbour is a big part of our summer here,” Grunig said.

Grunig will serve as interim mayor until the next municipal election in the fall of 2014.

As before the Show will continue to have a strong focus on Canadian Blues talent of which we have so much in this country.

All the Sponsors for INSIDE THE BLUES are in place and include The Cove Inn, Lake Effects Cottage Store and Wolfe Springs Golf & Waterfront Resort. They are all based in Westport, the most beautiful small town in eastern Ontario and a favourite destination for Ottawa visitors. Other Westport businesses my rotate in and out as Sponsors in the future. It’s a natural fit since, in addition to its great shopping and many cultural events, Westport has become known as the “Blues Capital of Eastern Ontario” thanks to the long-running BLUES ON THE RIDEAU and ACOUSTIC BLUE SUNDAY Series at The Cove Inn.

Host James Doran stated “I am really excited about bringing INSIDE THE BLUES back to DAWG FM – Canada’s first commercial all Blues radio station – and thank them for welcoming me back on air. I also want to thank my Sponsors – The Cove Inn, Lake Effects Cottage Store and Wolfe Springs Golf & Waterfront Resort – for supporting the Show. I couldn’t be doing it without them. I look forward to bringing the best in Blues music and interesting backgrounder information to listeners every week and hope that dedicated Blues fans, as well as people who may not know that much about the Blues but would like to learn more, will tune in regularly”.

The inaugural June 3rd show will feature music by the legendary Big Bill Broonzy, Chicago singer/harpmaster Billy Boy Arnold, the young up-and-coming Conor Gains Band from Cambridge Ontario, Toronto-based international star Shakura S’Aida off her great new album and Hamilton’s own Steve Strongman with some fabulous music off his new brand new CD.

125th Reunion

Land Preservation in Westport Scores Again

The Westport Land Conservation Trust won an important fight yet again in conserving Westport’s rural identity and more importantly, in conserving and protecting the environment and everyone who relies on it to maintain the environmental balance that we so enjoy.

The Board of Selectmen had no issues whatsoever in unanimously voting for the permanent conservation of 2 new parcels of land last Monday which include a 72 acre property located on Main Road, the one just adjacent to the Durham Brook area – another property being conserved. The second property might not be that big in number with only 11 acres just in front of the Westport Rivers Winery, but is still equally important.

These 2 properties now join other parcels of land throughout Westport that like the one in Route 177, where the Brookside Restaurant is, and the farm on Adamsville Road.

Now, everything is set for the head of the Energy and Environmental Affairs to approve for the preservation efforts to take effect. After the nod from the state secretary, then the said properties composed of mostly woodlands and wetlands will be among the properties under the Westport Land Conservation Trust’s name to preserve for all of Westport.

Westport’s Cable Company Adding New Channels

Good news for Westport digital cable users – Charter Communications, the company behind the cable service, has announced its plans of adding new channels to its lineup over the next month and a half.

While the company understands the demand and excitement for newer TV channels, they plant on making a smooth transition by slowly adding programs to each neighborhood on their network list. The company has announced the addition of 45 new digitals for its Westport customers. Furthermore, cable subscribers have the option of signing up for the Digital Sports View – a package with an additional 17 channels for only $5 a month.

Charter’s existing digital cable subscribers are currently being notified by mail and telephone on the necessary changes and additions to digital equipment needed to avail of the new services. All they have to do is head for the nearest Charter center to swap their Motorola digital receiver for a new Scientific Atlanta digital receiver.

According to Gregory A. Garabedian, Charter’s Vice President and general manager in the New England area, Charter aims to update and improve the technology and services they offer to subscribers in Westport. Their new array of digital channels is just one step in the right direction of more and better features for their customers.

Westport cable subscribers are certainly excited by this news, as more entertaining TV options make for a better bonding experience for friends, as well as family.
