Coffeehouse at the Wheeler’s

9

“Coffeehouse at the Wheeler” will become a French boite, or café on Friday, June 17, from 6 to 8 pm, when it returns with singer/guitarist Suzanne Sheridan and accordionist Don Gerundo performing an evening of café songs by Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.

A professional photographer as well as singer and songwriter, Sheridan launched the Friday evening coffeehouses at the WHS five years ago.

The venue takes its name from the Society’s headquarters, the 18th century Wheeler House on Avery Place. For the upcoming Coffeehouse, Sheridan will sing such Piaf standards as “La Vie en Rose,” “Milord,” “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” and “Mon Dieu” and Brel’s “Ne Me Quitte Pas” and “Si On N’a Que l’Amour,” (If we Only Have Love”) among others.

“Parisians love their cafes, known as boîtes,” Sheridan says, “and most French singers and songwriters begin their musical journeys singing in the boîtes of Paris.” Sheridan’s exposure to the Paris café scene came when she was in college and took a year abroad in Paris studying philosophy at the Sorbonne. More recently she has been attending French classes at the Westport library, where she used lyrics from Brel and Piaf songs to hone her French pronunciation.

Safe kids Week 2016

11

May 30 to June 5 – 2016 is the 20th Anniversary for Parachute’s Safe Kids Week.

Many Canadians are surprised to learn that preventable injuries kill more children every year than any other disease.

The good news is that prevention efforts are working – since 1996, Canada has enjoyed a decreasing trend in death and hospitalizations from preventable injuries overall.

But there is a still lot of work to do to keep children, and ourselves safe. Plan to take part in Parachute’s Safe Kids Week, happening May 30 – June 5, 2016 with a focus on the top injury issues that affect children on the road, at home and at play.

Check out the Parachute Safe Kids Week 2016 Resources and order your Community Toolkit today.

Safe Kids Week was originally a program of Parachute’s legacy organization Safe Kids Canada. The first annual Safe Kids Week took place in 1996.

Date :
May 30 to June 5

Location event:
Westport, ON
