What’s cooking in Westport

Cook together in the community kitchen on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month! What’s Cooking in Westport is on the 1st Tuesday each month (10am-1pm) at the Free Methodist Church! Learn new skills, take home food. Childcare is available.

Join us to try new foods and recipes, share a meal, bring extras home, have a good time, and meet new people in your community. We pick the recipes together, focusing on local, seasonal, budget-friendly ingredients. Some months we have a specific cultural theme, a guest speaker from the community, or a special event.

The group is facilitated by Registered Dietitian, Kate Earl, from Country Roads Community Health Centre. We discuss different nutrition and food safety topics each month and members share healthy eating tips with each other.

The program is FREE. There is no cost to participate. We also offer free childcare. Please ask us if you need help with travel costs. All we ask from you is that you participate in the cooking (and clean up!), come ready to have fun, and be open to trying new foods.

Westport Figure Skating Club

The Westport Area Skating Club has been an integral part of the Westport community for over 30 years.

The club offers learn-to-skate programs, adult skating, figure skating lessons, and hockey development programs. We are always happy to have new members and we look forward to seeing you on the ice!

Figure Skating is the heart of the Westport Area Skating Club! The figure skating program caters to the young and young-at-heart with members ranging from 7 to 57! The skating program in Westport offers an atmosphere of fun, friendship, and fitness rolled into one.

Like the other programs the skating club offers, the figure skating program is a Skate Canada sanctioned program. Skate Canada’s STARSkate program offers oppurtunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of dance, skating skills, free skate, and interpretive skating. Skaters have the option of taking private or group lesssons depending on their skill level and lesson availability. If the skater chooses, he or she can participate in the nationally standardized testing systems. This allow your son or daughter (or you!) to set personal goals and develop the skills needed to reach their goals at his or her own pace.

Blues on the Rideau with HARRISON KENNEDY & BAND

To kick off this year’s Series – from The Hammer – arguably Canada’s best Soul/Blues/Roots male vocalist (and a damn fine songwriter too) – Harrison returns to The Cove for a fourth visit. Growing up in Hamilton the Kennedy house was always full of music thanks to his famous uncle – Jazzman Jackie Washington who would bring artists home like Lonnie Johnson, Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday when they were passing through.  Harrison began his career in the late ‘60’s when his dynamic vocal talent earned him a spot on the world famous Motown band “Chairmen Of The Board” who shared the stage with artists like B.B. King, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and many more.

When the band broke up in the ‘70’s Harrison returned to Hamilton and took a “real job” as a factory foreman only playing music on the side for the next couple of decades. But his love of the Blues was too powerful and in 2000 he returned to music full time with his first album “Sweet Taste”. 7 more have followed including his most recent “Who U Tellin’?” 4 of them were nominated for Juno Awards and he won in 2015 for “This Is From Here”.

He’s also won 9 Hamilton Music Awards and received an astounding 38 Maple Blues Award nominations since 2005 in the categories of Male Vocalist, Acoustic Artist, Songwriter and Album Of The Year. Internationally he’s been nominated 8X for American Blues Music Awards and won the prestigious French Academie Charles Cros Award in the Blues category (other winners include Buddy Guy, Doctor John and Otis Taylor).

The past few years Harrison has hooked up with the great Eric Bibb and toured with him, Ruthie Foster and another Canadian talented Michael Jerome Browne wowing audiences everywhere especially in Europe where he has a huge following.

Fee: $70.
